How to Make DIY 'Vinyl' Decals {Without Any Special Machines}

Just when you thought there was no way to make DIY vinyl-like decals without a Silhouette, Cricut or other die cut machine.  Well, I'm here to tell you there is and it's sooo stinkin' easy!  The secret is this printable, cuttable, removable, repositionable vinyl-like material (but not vinyl) by Square1 Masterpieces.  Be sure to read all the way to the end of the post because I have an exclusive Square1 discount code for Two It Yourself readers!


I was looking for a way to make a new crock for my kitchen utensils.  So done with the apples....


I knew I had this old pot that an iris came in - killed that thing years ago - and haven't used the pot since.  But it just so happens it was perfect for my cooking utensils, although a little plain.   That was super easy to fix.


I headed straight to PicMonkey.com where I designed a label.  The site is free to use - unless you want to upgrade for $33 a year to get access to ALL the fonts and designs - and there are so many choices of designs, fonts, and overlays.

To design in PicMonkey go to PicMonkey.com> select Design > Click the butterfly icon on the left sidebar to look through all the overlays and designs.  I used one of the labels, changed the colors to match my decor, and then added some text.


When I was happy with my design I saved it to my desktop.


You can print from PicMonkey, but I always have a hard time "seeing" how big my design really is so I always reopen my design in Powerpoint before I print.

I couldn't decide how big I wanted my label to be so I made two copies in different sizes.   Now I'm ready to print.  This is where the Square1 PRINTABLES come in!  The Printables come in sheets that can be fed right into your inkjet printer like paper.  Be sure you have the sheet oriented so it will be printed on the "rough" side, not the shiny backing.  Print like you normally would on paper.
Here's how mine looked after it was printed.


Before you peel off the backing, use scissors to cut around the outer edge of your decal or label.

Once I had my label cut out I peeled off the backing and stuck the label onto my new utensil crock.


The awesome thing about SQ1Printables is, while they act like vinyl in some ways, they actually aren't.   The decals can be peeled off with no damage to the surface and repositioned, moved or removed.  So if in a year I want to give my crock a new look, I'll just peel off the label and I'll never be able to tell it was there.

The PRINTABLES adhere to a bunch of surfaces including glass, dry wall,  I even made some wall decals for my little guy's room using images I found in a google search.
